If your Open Access article is not based on a DFG-funded research project (see forms for DFG-Project articles and Project books) and you have no alternative funding options, you can apply for financial support with APCs via the FAU Open Access Publications Fund. Please ensure that your paper meets the eligibility criteria as listed below (e.g. support will only be granted if your invoice does not exceed 3000 € (incl. VAT) – invoices above this threshold will not be considered for funding, even if the author is prepared to pay the excess amount). Please also note that the library will invoice you any excess amount above the maximum funding of 1.500 € (incl. 19% German VAT) if your funding bid is successful. Please check in advance whether your department/institute/clinic is prepared to cover any potential excess amount.

The Article Processing Charge (APC) for my paper is below 3.000 Euros including VAT.
Please note: If your publisher is based outside of Germany, the Reverse Charge Mechanism comes into effect. This means that the VAT rate on these invoices will be 0.00 USD (or other currency). However, when the invoice is paid by the library, 19% German VAT are applied on top of the invoice amount. Please check whether your APC remains below the 3000 € threshold with 19% added to the net APC amount.

Regulation regarding maximum funding amount and remainder

Standard payment procedure: the library pays the invoice in full so that the publisher receives the payment as soon as possible. Subsequently, the library issues the author an invoice for any remaining amount above the maximum funding amount of 1.500 € (incl 19% VAT). If the total amount is below 1500 €, the fee will be covered in full by the library..

If your author contribution is covered by the university clinic, you usually need to supply them separately with a copy of the original publisher’s invoice, a copy of the acknowledgements stated in the publication (unless this is obvious from the first page of the manuscript) and the yellow refund request form. For further information please contact the relevant staff member at the clinic’s research funding department: Fachabteilung Forschungsfinanzierung.

Please confirm an address where we will send the invoice for any potential remaining amounts (this can be an FAU, university clinic or personal address if the invoice is to be paid privately or by a research partner). In case of third-party funding of the remaining amount please note that we cannot issue invoices to addresses outside of Germany.
