    Borrowing & ordering

Around 4 million books, journals and other media are available to borrow from the libraries at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) with a valid library card (activated FAUcard or user card). You can retrieve many of these media from the shelves in the reading rooms in the branch libraries yourself, while in the Main Library most books that are available for loan must be ordered via the catalogue first. There are also around 1 million media that can only be used in the reading rooms, such as reference works and historical collections.

Information on which media are available in which branches, where they are located and how you can use them can be found in the catalogue. Under the ‘Account‘ tab you can view information on the status of your user account, renew borrowed items and change your password. External users can also change their e-mail address here.

You may reserve media which are out on loan. As soon as a reserved item is received back, you will be sent a notification.

Borrowing is generally free of charge. Fees are only charged for special services and for overdue media. The University Library Erlangen-Nürnberg (UB) will send you a free, non-binding e-mail reminder that media is due to be returned shortly before the due date.

Media from individual branch libraries can sometimes be ordered from several branches.

The campus delivery service FAUdok enables students and employees at the University to have papers and extracts from books sent to them by e-mail.

During the Corona Pandemic, the UB set up an online delivery service to provide the teaching staff at FAU with the necessary literature.

For media that are not available at the UB, you can request an interlibrary loan, use direct delivery services, or make a purchase suggestion.

    FAQ

Each hit in the catalogue will show you what options you have for loaning and ordering. The most important options are:

    • available for loan: This is for media that you can pick up from the shelves by yourself. After picking up, you can lend them at a circulation desk.
    • for order: This is for media that are stored at a stack or are currently at other locations. To obtain them, you have to order them at first. They will then – after a certain amount of time that will be displayed to you during ordering – be ready for you to pick them up at the location you chose. Please mind the notes regarding Intralibrary Loan.
    • not for loan: This is for media that has to be present at the library at all times, and thus cannot be borrowed by anyone. These media can only be read within the reading room. If you would like to, it may be possible for you to copy some pages out of them.
    • available for loan, see in which branch via “copies” in detailed view: This is for media that is neither available at the location you have chosen nor possible to be ordered to your location. Therefore, you have to visit the location of the medium by yourself.

Members of the University (students, researchers and other employees) are allowed to borrow a maximum of 100 mediums at the same time.
External users are limited to a maximum of 50 mediums at once.
