Borrowing & ordering
Around 4 million books, journals and other media are available to borrow from the libraries at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) with a valid library card (activated FAUcard or user card). You can retrieve many of these media from the shelves in the reading rooms in the branch libraries yourself, while in the Main Library most books that are available for loan must be ordered via the catalogue first. There are also around 1 million media that can only be used in the reading rooms, such as reference works and historical collections.
Information on which media are available in which branches, where they are located and how you can use them can be found in the catalogue. Under the ‘Account‘ tab you can view information on the status of your user account, renew borrowed items and change your password. External users can also change their e-mail address here.
You may reserve media which are out on loan. As soon as a reserved item is received back, you will be sent a notification.
Borrowing is generally free of charge. Fees are only charged for special services and for overdue media. The University Library Erlangen-Nürnberg (UB) will send you a free, non-binding e-mail reminder that media is due to be returned shortly before the due date.
Media from individual branch libraries can sometimes be ordered from several branches.
The campus delivery service FAUdok enables students and employees at the University to have papers and extracts from books sent to them by e-mail.
For media that are not available at the UB, you can request an interlibrary loan, use direct delivery services, or make a purchase suggestion.
