Papyri

The Erlangen Papyri have been fully cataloged and digitized and are now available on the Papyrus Portal. The collection originally belonged to Professor Dr. Carl Schmidt (1868–1938) and was acquired by the University Library in 1934.

Coin Collections

The coin collection, which comprises around 28,000 items, is rather unusual for a university library. Contrary to what one might expect, the collection does not originate from the art collection of the Margraves of Ansbach; rather, it comes from various bequests and purchases.

  • Friedrich August Valentin Voit von Salzburg (1795–1858) amassed his collection between 1845 and 1858. He aimed to amass “exquisite gold coins, thalers, and medals from all European states.” Almost all of the coins and medals date from modern times and are well documented in a catalog.
  • In 1916, the Erlangen private scholar Dr. Friedrich Will’s collection of 12,000 coins was purchased. The collection includes coins from antiquity to modern times, but has only been cataloged in small sections.
  • The Ulrich and Ilse Zwicker Foundation comprises 11,000 coins. Assembled over decades with great expertise, this collection focuses on classical antiquity, from the beginning of coinage in archaic Greece (i.e., the sixth century BCE) to the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453.
  • The collection is largely cataloged. Dr. Bernhard Sinogowitz (1921-2006), the library director and head of the university library from 1966 to 1986, donated his valuable private collection of Byzantine gold coins.
