IIIF Interface for the Manuscripts of the Heilsbronn Abbey Library

Note

This interface is experimental and is provided on a best-effort basis.
Scope, access, and availability are subject to change without prior notice.
Performance may vary. The current scope and access are described on this page.

In the digital collection “Heilsbronn Monastery Library,” you will find an introduction to the history of the library.

The International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) defines data formats and protocols that enable the consistent access and delivery of image files, image derivatives and their associated metadata via the internet. It can be used to create virtual galleries, image series or collages that draw on data sources from around the world. For more information, please visit the official website. As part of the Digital Skills Hub, the University Library also offers an introduction to IIIF and Mirador on StudOn.

The digitised materials from the Heilsbronn Monastery Library are presented as image sets. A Mirador-Viewer is available to make them easier to use. and images can also be accessed directly via the IIIF-API. The API implements versions 2.0 of the IIIF Presentation API and IIIF Image API.

Access via Mirador

Mirador is a powerful, web-based image viewer. A preconfigured instance is available to demonstrate the IIIF interface for the manuscripts of the Heilsbronn Abbey Library. The URL is:

https://iiif.ub.fau.de/iiif/mirador.html

Note

Due to limitations of the interface, it may take a while for the images to load in Mirador. If some images do not appear, we recommend refreshing the page..

Below is a brief explanation of the functionality.

API Description

The API includes the following components:

  • Image series of individual works as IIIF manifest files
  • A list of all manifests in a collection file
  • Image server for delivering individual images

The Collection File

The collection file lists all available manifest files. It is available at

https://iiif.ub.fau.de/iiif/catalog/heilsbronn.json

The manifests are sorted by the work’s call number.

Manifests

A manifest is available for each work at its own URL. The template is:

https://iiif.ub.fau.de/iiif/presentation/2/<PID>/manifest

<PID> stands for persistent identifier of the work. Currently, there is no dedicated interface available for determining the PID. It is recommended that you retrieve the manifest’s URL via Mirador or the collection file.

The metadata contained in the manifest is automatically extracted from the Bavarian Union Catalog.

Detailed documentation on the structure of the manifest file is provided by the IIIF Presentation API.

Image Server

The image server provides the images associated with the manifests and the metadata for each image via a URL. The URL template is as follows:

https://iiif.ub.fau.de/iiif/image/2/<PID>/info.json

<PID> stands for image’s “persistent identifier.” It is recommended that you retrieve the image’s URL via the manifest file.

Image derivatives are generated on the fly with minimal caching. Consequently, response times may be affected by many concurrent requests, and timeouts may occur.

A detailed description of the Image Server’s features can be found in the IIIF Image API.
