OPEN FAU

Upload your publication to OPEN FAU. Further information and instructions can be found in the OPEN FAU FAQs.

Blocking Notice

Please email the application for the blocking note, approved by the doctoral office, to ub-repo@fau.de.

Please note that once your dissertation has been published on OPEN FAU, any subsequent requests to extend the embargo period will not be considered. You can use the same form to request an embargo period extension of up to one additional year.

Please submit your request for an extension to the Doctoral Office at least 30 days before the initial suspension expires. In order for it to be processed, the university library must receive the approved extension request at least 14 days before the deadline.

Further extensions are possible for the Department of Economics and Social Sciences. Information and the application form for the holding notice can be found at https://www.promotion.rw.fau.eu/doctorates/documents/.

Design of Title Pages

Please check docDaten to verify which version of the doctoral regulations applies to you. Depending on when your doctoral procedures were initiated, the line “RPromO” will state either “RPromO 2021” or “RPromO 2024”.

The following applies to all doctoral projects:

  • Use the unmodified German template from the RPromO appendix for the title pages. However, you can also use the English version if you wish.
  • Do not include logos, seals or illustrations on the title pages..

Rahmenpromotionsordnung 2024

In addition to the title pages, please fill in the faculty-specific cover page. https://www.intern.fau.de/kommunikation-und-marke/vorlagen/abschlussarbeiten/ (Access is only permitted from the university network or via VPN)

Submission

Submission of six printed copies, published

  • by FAU University Press (in accordance with § 17 (4) No. 2 of the RPromO, as currently valid) or
  • by a commercial publisher as a book with an ISBN, provided that the publisher confirms a minimum print run of 150 copies in the event of corresponding demand (in accordance with § 17 (4) No. 1 RPromO).

Please send the printed copies to the relevant dissertation office and include a valid email address with the shipment. We will contact you if we have any questions or to confirm receipt of the documents, and we will send you a confirmation of submission.

Title pages for publication by a commercial publisher

  • The use of the template for title pages is optional.
  • Identification as a thesis from FAU in the imprint or foreword, for example: “This thesis was accepted as a dissertation by the XXXX Faculty of Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg in XXXX.”
  • If the title of the submitted version differs from that of the published edition, this must be stated in either the imprint or the foreword.

Once you have uploaded your dissertation to OPEN FAU or delivered the required number of copies to the Main Library or the Economics and Social Sciences Branch Library, we will confirm your submission and forward it to the relevant Doctoral Office.

We also issue confirmation of submission immediately for dissertations with a blocking notice, rather than waiting until the blocking period has expired.

In accordance with §§ 11(3) and 17(4) of the RPromO FAU, in conjunction with your respective FPromO and the information provided by Early Career Support or the Graduate Centre, the following applies: Individual contributions that have been accepted for publication and are ‘in print’, or have already been published in electronic journals, are exempt from the publication requirement in OPEN FAU. This means that you do not have to republish these articles in full in your dissertation.

What to do with articles that have already been published or accepted:

  • Restricted rights (for example, the exclusive right to use belongs to the publisher): Omit the full text of the articles in question. Instead, add a clear reference, ideally including the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and the complete source reference.
  • Legally unproblematic (for example, open access articles under a Creative Commons license): In line with FAU’s Open-Science-Policy , we recommend including the full text of these articles in the dissertation.

Selecting a licence when uploading to Open FAU

  • All articles under the same CC license (such as CC BY 4.0): Select this license for the entire dissertation.
  • Different but compatible CC licences: Select the most restrictive of the licences used. The Creative Commons Mixer will help you to make your selection: https://ccmixer.edu-sharing.org/.
  • Conflicting CC licences: When uploading, select ‘The copyright and licence rights of the publisher apply, as well as any open access rights negotiated with the publisher.’ Add clear information about the different licences to the PDF, for example in the articles themselves or on a separate overview page containing rights information.
