The University Library Erlangen-Nürnberg (UB) provides access to a wide range of academic CD-ROM and online databases for all subjects via the Database Information System (DBIS). The Database Information System is a joint service offered by academic libraries that allows users to search databases.
Electronic journals can only be found in the
Electronic Journals Library, whereas electronic dissertations and postdoctoral theses can only be found on FAU’s document server OPEN FAU.
The Erlangen-Nuremberg University Library provides access to the full text of all current DIN standards and VDI guidelines via the nautos database. The database can also be used as a research tool for European and VDE standards, even without full-text access. Nautos is accessible to all members of the FAU across the university. Please also refer to the technical information on the pages of our
Database Information System (DBIS).
Reproduction (e.g., printing, copying, data transfer) of standard documents is permitted for research and teaching purposes within the university.
Authorized users are:
- Members of the university
- Lecturers and guest lecturers
- Students
- Library users at the internet workstations
Authorized users may:
- Conduct research for themselves
- Copy a selection of the results
- Make printouts
- Only use reproductions for teaching purposes as working documents within the university
Not allowed:
- Commercial use
- The creation of altered documents
- The transfer of data, whether in whole or in part and whether in electronic form or as a paper copy.
- Commercial information services
The full text of VDE standards can be accessed via the VDE NormenBibliothek , which is available university-wide. The rules here are even stricter: only teaching staff are permitted to use free excerpts from DIN VDE standards for their own lecture materials. All other uses are subject to a fee and require approval (See DIN-VDE Information Sheet 4 for conditions relating to the reproduction of DIN-VDE standards for teaching purposes.[GERMAN]). Teachers may use excerpts from DIN VDE standards in their personal lecture materials free of charge, provided they do not share them with anyone else, including other teachers, pupils or students, and provided they include the following note on each copy.
In the Technical and Natural Sciences Branch Library (TNZB) you can conduct research on a single-user PC in nautos and the VDE Standards Library. To do so, please reserve a single-user PC via the TNZB information.
Not a member of FAU? Please contact the TNZB information.
Patent-Research-System
All library users can access the European Patent Office’s patent research system on one computer available at the Science and Technology Branch Library (TNZB). This computers provides direct and secure access to the Global Patent Index (GPI). The GPI contains over 70 million patents from around the globe. There are three different research options, and the data is organised into up to 100 different fields. If an electronic full-text version of a document is available, it can be accessed via the index. The GPI is updated continuously.

Geodata and geoservices from the Bavarian Surveying Authority
The Bavarian surveying offices provide various data sets, such as digital terrain models and orthophotos, as open data. These data sets are licensed under CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-ND 4.0 and can be accessed at https://geodaten.bayern.de/opengeodata.
Starting January 1, 2023, Bavarian state universities can use additional geodata based on an agreement between state ministries. This includes ALKIS® raster data, vector data from the real estate cadastre, DOP 20, and geoservices, among other things. The agreement and an accompanying letter from the StMWK can be found here.
