Subscribe to Open (S2O) beschreibt ähnlich wie Read and Publish-Vereinbarungen ein Modell, in dem in Abonnement-Zeitschriften das Open-Access-Publizieren pauschal ermöglicht wird.
Wie der Name bereits sagt, verpflichten sich die bisherigen Abonnenten bei S2O, die Abonnementzahlungen bei einem Wechsel auf ein Open-Access-Modell beizubehalten. Durch die verlagsseitig gewohnten Einnahmen entfallen in der Regel auch Publikationsgebühren für Autorinnen und Autoren. Es ist damit für beide Seiten vorteilhaft. Sollte es doch zu zahlreichen Abbestellungen kommen, da die Inhalte nunmehr frei zugänglich sind, wird verlagsseitig wieder auf das alte Abonnement-Modell umgestellt.
S2O basiert entsprechend stark auf der Verpflichtung teilnehmender Einrichtungen, die entweder vormals schon ein Abonnement hatten oder neu eines abschließen, um die Open-Access-Zugänglichkeit bei Fluktuationen im Kreis der Abonnenten weiter aufrechtzuerhalten. Auch die Universitätsbibliothek unterstützt S2O.
Folgende Zeitschriften ermöglichen über S2O das kostenfreie Open-Access-Publizieren für ihre Autorinnen und Autoren (siehe auch S2O Community , Open Access Directory Wiki und Suche in der Elektronischen Zeitschriftenbibliothek ).
