¬A Force Profonde : The Power, Politics, and Promise of Human Rights. – Philadelphia, Pa : University of Pennsylvania Press, 2013. – 1 Online-Ressource (352 S.). – (Pennsylvania Studies in Human Rights)
Biographical note: Edward A. Kolodziej is Director of the Office of Global Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has written or edited thirteen books on security and foreign policy, including Coping with Conflict After the Cold War and Making and Marketing Arms: The French Experience and Its Implications for the International System. – Main description: Presenting detailed portraits by leading authorities of the politics of human rights across the major regions of the
globe, A Force Profonde: The Power, Politics, and Promise of Human Rights reveals human rights to be a force as powerful as capitalist markets and technological innovation in shaping global governance. Human rights issues mobilize populations regardless of their national, ethnic, cultural, or religious differences. Yet progress in advancing human rights globally, as Edward A. Kolodziej and the other contributors to the volume contend, depends decisively on the local support and the efforts of
the diverse and divided peoples of the world—a prerequisite that remains problematic in many parts of the globe.A Force Profonde explores conceptions of human rights from Western as well as other major world traditions in an attempt to dispel the notion that tyranny, culture, and religion are the only challenges to human rights. Focusing on regional patterns of conflict, the authors point out that violations often have to do with disputes over class, social status, economic privilege, and
personal power. In addition, they contend that conflicts over identity are more prevalent in the West than commonly thought. Sharply conflicting views are to be found between the European Union and the United States over issues like the death penalty. Splits within the West between rival Christian sects and between religious adherents and partisans of secularization are no less profound than those in other regions

Genocide in Cambodia : Documents from the Trial of Pol Pot and Ieng Sary. – Philadelphia, Pa : University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012. – 1 Online-Ressource (584 S.). – (Pennsylvania Studies in Human Rights)
Biographical note: Howard J. De Nike teaches in the Department of Anthropology, San Francisco State University, and was the Director of the Cambodia Law Project at the University of San Francisco School of Law. John Quigley is Professor in the Ohio State University College of Law and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Political Science. Kenneth J. Robinson is an associate at the law firm of Bloomfield and Kempf. – Main description: The Khmer Rouge held power in Cambodia from 1975 to 1979 and
aggressively pursued a policy of radical social reform that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Cambodians through mass executions and physical privation. In January 1979, the government was overthrown by former Khmer Rouge functionaries, with substantial backing from the army of Vietnam. In August of that year a special court, the People’s Revolutionary Tribunal, was constituted to try two of the Khmer Rouge government’s most powerful leaders, Pol Pot and Ieng Sary. The charge
against them was genocide as it was defined in the United Nation’s genocide convention of 1948. At the time, both men were in the Cambodian jungle leading the Khmer Rouge in a struggle to regain power; they were, therefore, tried in absentia.Genocide in Cambodia assembles documents from this historic trial and contains extensive reports from the People’s Revolutionary Tribunal. The book opens with essays that discuss the nature of the primary documents, and places the trial in its historical,
legal, and political context. The documents are divided into three parts: those relating to the establishment of the tribunal; those used as evidence, including statements of witnesses, investigative reports of mass grave sites, expert opinions on the social and cultural impact of the actions of Pol Pot and Ieng Sary, and accounts from the foreign press; and finally the record of the trial, beginning with the prosecutor’s indictment and ending with the concluding speeches by the attorneys for
the defense and prosecution. The trial of Pol Pot and Ieng Sary was the world’s first genocide trial based on United Nations’s policy as well as the first trial of a head of government on a human rights-related charge. This documentary record is significant for the history of Cambodia, and it will be of the highest importance as well to the international legal and human rights communities

Giving Meaning to Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. – Philadelphia, Pa : University of Pennsylvania Press, 2001. – 1 Online-Ressource (280 S.). – (Pennsylvania Studies in Human Rights)
Biographical note: Isfahan Merali is Legal Counsel of the Ontario Human Rights Commission. Valerie Oosterveld is a Legal Officer with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. – Main description: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, arguably the founding document of the human rights movement, fully embraces economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as civil and political rights, within its text. However, for most of the fifty years since the Declaration was
adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations, the focus of the international community has been on civil and political rights. This focus has slowly shifted over the past two decades. Recent international human rights treaties—such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women—grant equal importance to protecting and advancing nonpolitical rights. In this collection of essays, Isfahan Merali, Valerie
Oosterveld, and a team of human rights scholars and activists call for the reintegration of economic, social, and cultural rights into the human rights agenda. The essays are divided into three sections. First the contributors examine traditional conceptualizations of human rights that made their categorization possible and suggest a more holistic rights framework that would dissolve such boundaries. In the second section they discuss how an integrated approach actually produces a more
meaningful analysis of individual economic, social, and cultural rights. Finally, the contributors consider how these rights can be monitored and enforced, identifying ways international human rights agencies, NGOs, and states can promote them in the twenty-first century

Freedom’s Ordeal : The Struggle for Human Rights and Democracy in Post-Soviet States. – Philadelphia, Pa : University of Pennsylvania Press, 1998. – 1 Online-Ressource (312 S.). – (Pennsylvania Studies in Human Rights)
Biographical note: Peter Juviler is Professor of Political Science at Barnard College and Codirector of the Human Rights Center at Columbia University. – Main description: Fifteen countries have emerged from the collapse of the Soviet Union. Freedom’s Ordeal recounts the struggles of these newly independent nations to achieve freedom and to establish support for fundamental human rights. Although history has shown that states emerging from collapsed empires rarely achieve full democracy in their
first try, Peter Juviler analyzes these successor states as crucial and not always unpromising tests of democracy’s viability in postcommunist countries. Taking into account the particularly difficult legacies of Soviet communism, Freedom’s Ordeal is distinguished by its careful tracing of the historical background, with special attention to human rights before, during, and after communism. Juviler suggests that the culture and practices of despotism may wither wherever modernization conflicts
with tyranny and with the curtailment or denial of democratic rights and freedoms

Reproductive freedom, torture and international human rights : challenging the masculinisation of torture / Ronli Sifris. – 1. publ. – London [u.a.] : Routledge, 2014. – 1 Online-Ressource. – (Routledge research in human rights law)
Based on the author’s thesis (doctoral)–Monash Univeristy, 2011, under title: Conceptualising restrictions on abortion and involuntary sterilisation procedures as torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. – Includes bibliographical references and index — „This book contributes to a feminist understanding of international human rights by examining restrictions on reproductive freedom through the lens of the right to be free from torture. It examines
the extension of the prohibition of torture to encompass situations beyond the traditional detainee context in recent years to encompass situations such as rape and female genital mutilation. It then goes on to explore
