The next and 10th “Long Night of Writing” will take place in the Main Library in Erlangen on Thursday, March 5, from 4 pm to 11 pm. Some workshops are only held online. Participation is free without prior registration. At 5 pm, there will be an anniversary event with a special “pUB quiz".

You can look forward to workshops on various topics, from writer's block to academic writing and researching with artificial intelligence. These include special courses for international students, some of which are in English. The program is complemented by individual writing consultations in English and German (also for international students). You can also relax with yoga or (non-alcoholic) cocktails and take part in the aforementioned “pUB quiz,” where you can win a special labyrinth tour of the University Library

The Departmental Library for Romance Studies (07RO) and the Library of the Department of Islamic Religious Studies (01DI) moved from their previous locations to their new shared premises on the 2nd floor of Werner-von-Siemens-Straße 61. Access to the entrance area of the library (room 02.38) is only possible via the eastern entrance of the building (on Mozartstraße).

In TB 07RO, the separation of call number groups into different rooms has been abolished; the holdings are now arranged completely in alphabetical order. The previously outsourced call number area 07RO90 has been integrated.

The journals 07RO/GS90 and the old holdings from before 1900 have been moved to the basement of Japanese Studies 07JA (Bismarckstraße 1a) and can be used there on site. Articles can be ordered via FAUdok.

The holdings of 01DI are housed in a separate room and are accessible throughout the opening hours of the Romance Studies Departmental Library.

The new premises at Werner-von-Siemens-Straße 61 offer research computers, a copying and scanning room, as well as individual and group study places.

The University Library Erlangen-Nürnberg is taking part in two events at this year’s Nuremberg Digital Festival.

At the open-space event on the topic of The Future of Reading – Digital Transformation in Publishing , participants can explore new developments and future trends in publishing library work on 2 July 2025 from 17:00 – 19:00 on site ‘Auf AEG’ and meet the team from the university publishing house.

The lecture AI Tools for academic research and writing  provides an insight into AI-supported research and writing tools and will take place virtually on 9 July 2025 from 10:00 – 11:00.

On Friday, April 4, the first-ever nationwide Night of the Libraries will take place in Germany. Together with the Public Library Erlangen, the University Library is taking part in this exciting event. Under the motto “Knowledge. Share. Discover”, the two libraries are offering a range of free and engaging activities starting at 6 pm:

• Lectures at the Main Library: “How to Cite Correctly and Avoid Plagiarism”, “Flower Power – the University Library’s Historic Botanical Collections”, and book recommendations from the City library!
• Guided Tours offering a behind-the-scenes look at the University Library and Public Library. Explore hidden paths from the basement of the Main Library to the roof of the Old University Library – in 1,000 steps!
• Library Rally starting at the Public Library and finishing at the University Library: at various stations, you will find challenging puzzles, exciting tasks and fascinating facts from the world of books and media!
• Information Booth at the Public Library: Trainees from the University Library will provide interesting insights into careers in the library field!
• Exhibitions at the Main Library: along with the anniversary exhibition in the entrance area, there is also a poster display on our digital collections in Reading Room 3!
• Silent Disco: starting at 9 pm, the Public Library will turn into a huge dance floor… put on your headphones, choose your channel and dance the night away!

The Love Data Week will take place again this year from February 10-14, 2025. Under the motto “Whose Data Is It, Anyway?”, institutions around the world are offering events related to research data. Many events are virtual and open to everyone.

FAU is taking part with two events:

• On 11.02.2025 at 12:30 “Making research comprehensible – a practical exercise with terminal blocks” will take place in the TNZB.
• On 12.02.2025 from 13:00 – 13:30 there will be a coffee lecture on the FAUDataCloud.

By participating in the Germany-wide Springer Nature Transformative Agreement, the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität is offering its members and those of the University Hospital read-only access to all Nature journals from now until the end of 2028.

In addition, corresponding authors of participating institutions can publish their research articles free of charge in Nature and in the 38 hybrid Nature-branded research journals under a CC-BY license up to a maximum article limit set for the consortium.

The WSZB group study room was remodelled at the request of the students. In addition to some new, partially height-adjustable tables and ergonomic stools, there is now also a small lounge corner. With a sofa, an armchair and a bench, this invites students to relax together between study phases. Felt partitions with castors provide more privacy for the individual groups.

Two Samsung Flips were purchased to make it easier for students to work together. These are interactive displays on which notes can be created with a corresponding pen and then saved. The displays can also be used as an extended screen for laptops, tablets or smartphones. This is done either wirelessly or via the attached USB-C cable.

Another technical innovation are Meeting Owls, which enable hybrid meetings with a 360-degree camera and integrated speakers. They can be borrowed from the circulation desk if required.

The concept was developed with the help of some students who took part in a seminar organised by the Chair of Business Education and Human Resources Development in the summer semester of 2023 to redesign the group workroom. The students worked in two teams to think about creativity, ergonomics and health, the atmosphere and technology in the room and then developed suggestions for improvement.

The group study room is reserved for FAU members.
